I have recently had the pleasure of a trip to Tuscany, in fact a return trip having last been there on honeymoon. This gave me an opportunity to have another go photographing some of the beautiful places we visited before. This felt quite liberating in a way, because I knew what to expect and wasn’t worried about missing anything since I already had photos from the last time that I was happy with.

When we went to the medieval fortified town of San Gimignano I decided to try an experiment and go out with the intention of converting all my photos to black and white. I’ve not tried this before – I generally just convert individual shots retrospectively, but this time I wanted to try to think differently about composition and really emphasise the shapes and textures of the old streets and buildings.

I’m really pleased how this set has turned out (and it is definitely worth clicking on the images to see them at higher resolution).
